What is Arthritis?
Beside painful, what is arthritis?
Arthritis means joint inflammation, but the term is used to describe more than 100 conditions that affect joints, the tissues that surround the joint, and other connective tissues.
These conditions tend to involve pain, aching, stiffness, and swelling in and around one or more joints.
The causes of arthritis vary depending on the type you have.
The Types of Arthritis
According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 100 types of arthritis that affect more than 58 million people across the United States.
The most common types of arthritis include:
1. Osteoarthritis (OA)
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
3. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)
4. Fibromyalgia
5. Gout
Each type of arthritis comes with its own problems, pains and challenges.
Defining Each Type of Arthritis
1. Osteoarthritis (OA)
OA, also called degenerative arthritis, is the most common type. With OA, cartilage in your joints break down, eventually causing your bones to rub together and your joints to be inflamed, which leads to pain and bone injury.
Common symptoms include:
- Joint soreness
- Morning stiffness
- Loss of flexibility
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
With RA, the body’s immune system is dysfunctional and attacks the tissues of the body’s own joints and other organs. The immune system normally triggers inflammation that protects a person from viruses, bacteria and other invaders.
In people with autoimmune diseases like RA, inflammation becomes overactive and attacks healthy tissues – such as the lining of the joints.
Persistent inflammation can eventually lead to permanent damage to joints and other organs.
Common symptoms include:
- Disrupted sleep
- Weight loss
- Tender, warm, swollen joints
3. Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA)
Common symptoms include:
- Inflamed, swollen and painful joints, often in the fingers and toes
- Deformed joints from chronic inflammation
- Pain and redness in the eyes
4. Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes pain all over the body, sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress. The pain and tenderness tend to come and go and move about the body.
Common symptoms include:
- Pain and stiffness all over the body
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Sleep problems
5. Gout
This results in extremely painful joint inflammation.
Common symptoms include:
- Redness, swelling and pain in your toes, hands, feet, ankles, knees, and wrists
- Joints feeling hot and tender
